Young Carers

Under 18s

Are you under 18 and helping to look after someone at home? If you provide physical, personal, or emotional care for a family member with a disability, long-term illness, mental health condition, or substance misuse issue, you are a Young Carer.

We want to make sure you have the same opportunities as your friends.

Our practice can support you by:

  • Flagging Your Record: Letting our doctors know you are a carer so we can offer flexible appointments and health support.
  • One-to-One Support: Connecting you with the Derbyshire Young Carers Service, which provides dedicated support workers, fun activities, and “time out” from your caring role.
  • School & College Help: Providing advice on how to talk to your teachers so they understand your responsibilities at home.
  • Young Carer Assessment: Helping you get a Young Carer’s Needs Assessment to see what extra help you and your family might need.

Take the first step: You don’t need a professional to refer you. You can refer yourself online by clicking the button below:

The Derbyshire Young Adult Carers Service offers tailored guidance on:

  • Education & Employment: Support with UCAS applications, student finance, or finding “carer-friendly” employers.
  • Transition Assessments: Ensuring that as you turn 18, your support plan moves smoothly from children’s to adult social care services.
  • Peer Support: Connecting you with other young adults in Derbyshire who understand the unique pressure of caring in your 20s.
  • Grants & Funding: Helping you access the Carer’s Personal Budget to pay for things that help you maintain your own identity and wellbeing.
